Thinking About Working for the USPTO?
Is US citizenship required to work at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office?
Yes. US citizenship is a requirement of employment here, and there will be no exceptions.
What can I expect an interview to be like?
You can expect questions about your technical aptitude, training and experience in the area for which
you're being considered. The interview process is focused on determining how well you take
instruction, the depth of your oral and written communications skills, your decision-making ability, how
well you could work with other examiners and employees, and other work and personal habits.
Where is the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office located?
The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office is centrally located on a campus style setting in Alexandria Virginia.
Does the USPTO hire for positions other than Patent Examiner?

Are all employees eligible for benefits?
The large majority of USPTO employees are eligible for benefits. Please refer to your offer letter for specific benefits you are eligible for.
Will the federal government repay my college loans?
USPTO does not offer assistance on repaying college loans at this time.
Will the federal government assist me in receiving future education?
USPTO does have programs in place for those who wish to receive further education.
How do I apply for a job with the USPTO?

Is housing provided for student program participants?
USPTO does not provide student housing at this time.
Is a security clearance required for USPTO employment?
No, but US citizenship is required for all positions.
Is parking or public transportation available to the USPTO campus?
A full discussion of getting to our campus is available on the Commuting to USPTO page. Public transportation and parking are available, at some expense to you.
Are there opportunities with the USPTO outside the Washington, D.C. area campus?
Not at this time. USPTO is headquartered in Alexandria, VA.
Are there social and cultural opportunities at the USPTO?
Yes, we celebrate diversity and our employees in a number of ways. Cultural Special Emphasis Programs serve as affinity groups and educational opportunities for all USPTO employees. Many of us also belong to the PTO Society, a network of patent and trademark professionals celebrating our field and learning new things about it.

Does the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office offer a 401(k) plan?
As a Federal Government agency, we offer the Thrift Savings Plan (TSP), which is similar to a 401(k).
The TSP allows you to contribute up to 14% of your gross pay (restrictions apply to newly
hired employees). If you would like more details, please call the Office of Human Resources at

Does the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office require a dress code?
We prefer a business casual dress code. Since Patent Examiners maintain some contact with the public, they
are encouraged to present a neat and clean appearance.

Is parking available at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office facilities?
Yes, parking is available and is at your own expense.
Does the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office offer transit subsidy?
Yes. You may receive up to a maximum of $110 per month.
